Resignation of Nhlanhla Nene and Appointment of Tito Mboweni as Minister of Finance By: Wayne Thring, ACDP Deputy President The African Christian Democratic Party welcomes the resignation and replacement of Nhlanhla Nene, as the Minister of Finance. This comes after Nene admitted, at the Zondo Commission on State Capture, that he lied about his association or meetings held with members of the Gupta family. It is the view of the ACDP that those holding positions in the public sphere, must do so with integrity, upholding the values, tenants and laws found in the Public Finance Management Act, amongst others. They are called upon to disburse public funds judiciously, showing themselves to be trustworthy, upholding proper financial management and clean governance in their areas of responsibility. Failure to do so is a dereliction of duty. The Position of Finance Minister has all of these responsibilities and values attached to it, but in Nene’s case the most important value was that of trust. This has been broken and Nene has to pay the price. The ACDP notes and appreciates the fact that former Finance Minister Nene, has done the honourable thing and resigned. This is almost unheard of in South African politics, particularly under the ruling party. Indeed, if anything positive is to come out of this Nene debacle, it is that a welcomed precedent has been set for other members of the Cabinet and also those holding key government positions, who should have resigned but have not done so. In this light, Nene’s resignation is earth-shattering and most definitely, ground breaking. The appointment of Mr. Tito Mboweni, as the new Finance Minister is, in the view of the ACDP, a positive step. The ACDP has consistently said that there are two fundamentals that are needed to turn our economy around; policy certainty and political stability. It is our hope that Mr. Mboweni will positively contribute to this certainty and stability. We wish him well as new Finance Minister. Wayne Thring ACDP Deputy President
